Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes (GDM) affects many Australian women, early detection protects mother and baby

Women with gestational diabetes or pre-existing diabetes during pregnancy should be under the care of an endocrinologist. Your endocrinologist will set personalised blood glucose targets based on your medical history, current glucose levels, and your baby’s growth on ultrasound.

A Diabetes Educator can support you with:

  • Pre-pregnancy planning

  • Monitoring of blood sugar levels during pregnancy

  • Healthy eating advice

  • Insulin education

  • Strategies to manage symptoms and prevent complications

  • Bariatric patients who develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy

  • Postpartum diabetes care

  • National Diabetes Service Scheme (NDSS) registrations & access to supplies (testing strips, sharps and syringes)
